2011 BOYS TENNIS

In 2011, the Sagemont Prep boys varsity tennis team etched a memorable chapter in school history by winning the program’s first-ever FHSAA state championship, showcasing both depth and dominance throughout the season. The Lions controlled district and regional play with confident victories, advancing to the state tournament as clear contenders. Once at states, their consistency across the lineup separated them from the competition—Sagemont players advanced deep into singles draws at multiple positions, piling up valuable points that put the championship within reach even before doubles play had finished. In fact, the Lions clinched the state title early, earning 16 of a possible 17 points prior to the doubles semifinals and finals, an emphatic display of the team’s collective strength.

The season was highlighted by a balance of top-line talent and reliable depth. Senior leader and valedictorian Zack McCourt was the cornerstone of the squad, finishing the year ranked #1 in Florida and #9 nationally among 18-year-old boys, all while maintaining an extraordinary 5.14 GPA. His leadership on and off the court set the tone for the team, but he was far from alone. Every member of the starting lineup contributed to the championship run, with players in the middle and lower flights consistently winning key matches that proved decisive in the team standings. The doubles teams also brought energy and chemistry, often providing the final exclamation points on match victories.

This breakthrough season not only delivered a historic state title but also elevated the reputation of Sagemont Prep tennis across Florida. By combining academic excellence, individual talent, and a unified team spirit, the 2011 Lions established a legacy that would fuel the program’s continued success in the years that followed.
