
2023 BOYS BASKETBALL
The 2023 season was a historic one for the Sagemont Prep Lions, who finished with an outstanding 29–4 record and captured the Class 2A FHSAA Boys Basketball State Championship, the program’s third state title and first since 2014. Ranked ninth overall in Florida, first in Class 2A, and 54th nationally, the Lions established themselves as one of the premier teams in the state.
Their championship run was highlighted by a hard-fought victory over perennial powerhouse Orlando Christian Prep, a win that showcased the team’s toughness, defensive intensity, and ability to rise in the biggest moments.Sagemont’s success was fueled by a balanced roster led by senior guard Tynan Becker, who averaged 14.3 points per game and led the team in both steals and blocks. Fellow senior guard Maxx Martinez added 11.9 points per game and provided outside shooting with a 35% clip from beyond the arc, while senior guard Ashton Smith was the team’s top playmaker, dishing out 6.8 assists per game.
In the frontcourt, senior forward Danielius Kasparas was an efficient scorer, converting 66% of his field goal attempts, and junior forward Kenneth Lopez anchored the defense with 1.9 blocks and 5.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard Dominic Issa also made key contributions, leading the team in free throw percentage and pulling down 5.6 rebounds per game.
The Lions’ depth, leadership, and chemistry carried them through a demanding season and a challenging playoff run. Their championship victory not only marked the beginning of a new era of dominance for Sagemont Prep basketball but also laid the foundation for the back-to-back titles that followed in 2024 and 2025. The 2023 team will be remembered as the squad that reignited the Lions’ championship tradition and set the tone for years of success to come.
