LUIS MARCANO

CLASS OF 2016

Luis Anibal Marcano Bravo, born March 28, 1998, in Kralendijk, Bonaire, is a former standout collegiate tennis player and emerging coach with a strong record of leadership both on and off the court. A four-time letterwinner at the University of Delaware, Marcano served as team captain and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president, while also representing Blue Hen athletes on the NCAA Competition Oversight Committee. Over his career, he compiled 30 singles wins and more than 20 doubles victories, highlighted by a dominant 7–2 doubles record in his senior season. In 2020, he became the first player in Delaware program history to earn the ITA Atlantic Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award as well as the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award, cementing his legacy as both a competitor and role model.

Marcano’s dedication extended beyond the court, where he twice earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, consistently appeared on the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, and spearheaded numerous community service initiatives through partnerships with the Special Olympics, Food Bank of Delaware, and the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. After graduating with a degree in computer engineering in 2020 and beginning his master’s studies in robotics, Marcano transitioned into coaching, joining the University of Delaware men’s tennis staff as a volunteer assistant in the 2021–22 season. Before his collegiate career, he competed on the ITF Junior Circuit representing the Netherlands Antilles, gaining international experience in tournaments across the Caribbean and the United States. Known for his sportsmanship, academic excellence, and passion for giving back, Luis Marcano continues to inspire as both a coach and ambassador for the sport.
