Alexander was a standout football player at Reynolds. As a solid 160 pound lineman, he received all-state honors from 1949-1951, and went on to play at the University of North Carolina where he lettered in football from 1952-1954. He later returned to his alma mater and coached multiple sports for many seasons including womens softball  Football Player (1949-1951), Baseball Player (1949-1950), Basketball Player (1949-1950)
