He attended Reynolds High School and Virginia Tech College on football and track scholarships. His early athletic career started with Pop Warner Football and continued as the star running back for the football team. He also participated in track, earning state records.

His NC track records included high and low hurdles as well as individually achieving 15 of the 19 team's point in one state championship track meet. In 1962 he won the state championship in the 120 yard Hurdles and the 180 yard low hurdles. He was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Reid was one of the founders of the Winston-Salem Salt Water Sport Fishing Club. He also fished in many the Big Rock Tournaments. He loved hunting, fishing, and all things outdoors. Reid operated a home repair business serving many loyal customers and friends
