John was a celebrated football player at UNC with Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice and Art Weiner. After college, he became RJR’s football coach, winning a state championship…his football program was featured in Life Magazine. He was also an assistant principal until he went to Hanes High School to become principal. When Pop Joyner retired in 1962, Tandy returned. He left in 1966 to take a job with Hanes Corporation. Later, he moved to Holden Beach, NC, where he served as mayor. He spent his last years residing in Chapel Hill and died in 1988. A portion of Hanes Park is named for him. He and his wife, who now lives in Durham, have five children.
