He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War serving on the USS Antietam aircraft carrier. He was a long-time member of Ardmore Moravian Church. For many years, he worked in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system in the capacity of teacher, assistant principal, and principal until his retirement as principal of Lewisville Elementary School.
