Mary Garber is synonymous with sportswriting…she was one of the first women in the country to be a sportswriter and has won enough awards to fill three pages. She was born in NY and moved to Winston-Salem at a young age. Most notably, her grandfather founded the company, the Northeastern Construct. Her senior photo in the 1933 Black and Gold of which she was a staff member, lists her ambition as wanting to become a journalist and also playing five different sports. Mary graduated from Hollins College in Virginia in 1938. Her sister, Neely, was her devoted companion until her death last year in October.
