Doug Chaffins (1999)

OUTSTANDING COACH

Induction Year: 1999

Garrett, Kentucky, 1955 would find Douglas Chaffins graduating first in his class. Playing basketball for four years, Doug would receive recognition as All District his junior and senior years. The prestige of being All Region his senior year would help earn a basketball scholarship to Pikeville College in Kentucky. Doug would play basketball while working on and completing his Bachelor of Science degree in 1959.

Doug would find an opportunity to begin a career in coaching that would lead to an overall record of 185 Wins, 120 losses. During this time of coaching basketball at Tecumseh High School (1960 - 1979) the trophy case would be filled with many league championship trophies. He would also bring home several prestigious Troy Holiday Tournament trophies as well. One could tell Doug had a first class program when the team arrived in the Black Tecumseh "T" blazers. These teams would show the poise and confidence of champions on and off the court. This type of pride in a program would eventually lead Doug to serve as an Assistant Coach for the USA-Ohio All Star Team. In addition to this, the Ohio High School Athletic Association would recognize him with the Southwest District Coach of the Year.

When not actively coaching basketball, Doug would start the Boys Tennis program and coach it as well. Needing to continue to improve these athletes, he would start the New Carlisle City Summer Tennis Program and direct it for ten years. There were many a morning residents of New Carlisle would drive past Smith Park and find Doug busy at work cleaning and squeegeeing the courts for summer play. As the summer days would heat up, so would the tennis matches that carried many matches into the evening hours. The lights to the courts would be on almost every evening.

Committed to improving his community. Doug would serve as one of the founders of the Tecumseh YMCA. Dedicated to helping youth, would find him serving as the first president also.

Before retiring from the Tecumseh Local School District, Doug would serve as Athletic Director for fourteen years (1978 - 1992). During this time, Tecumseh would be involved in several leagues before settling in the former Mad River Valley Conference to find many of the same teams in the Central Buckeye Conference. Under his direction, the athletic complex would improve considerably, thus starting a movement that is carried on today. For these efforts, the outdoor sports complex would bear his name. The Doug Chaffins Athletic Complex, which consists of Spitzer Stadium, Bob Davis Baseball Field, a softball field, and soccer practice fields.

Doug and his wife Rosemary, have one son, John David. They are members of the Honey Creek Prebysterian Church where Doug is an Acting Deacon. The couple still resides in New Carlisle and has had many a Tecumseh athlete and booster at their home for dinner.
