Mike Herbert became the Director of Athletics for the Lakers in the fall of 2011. After 17 years of coaching, 7 years as the Women’s Basketball Coach at SWOCC, he stepped down to focus on his administrative duties in 2015.
Dr. Herbert helped the Women’s Basketball team to an 18-13 record in 2014-2015 and their third appearance at the NWAC championship tournament since 2001. The Lakers finished 8th overall in 2012-2013 and 4th in 2014-2015 at the championships.
Dr. Herbert came to SWOCC in the fall of 2007 as a part-time instructor and assistant coach for the men’s basketball program. That season the men’s team qualified for the NWAC tournament and made it to the final four. Previous to coming to SWOCC Dr. Herbert resided in Granbury, Texas where he was a Physical Education teacher and basketball coach at Garner ISD. Dr. Herbert has also been an assistant coach at Sandia High School (Albuquerque, NM), Santa Rosa High School (Santa Rosa, CA), Gavilan Junior College (Gilroy, CA) and Humboldt State University (Arcata, CA).
Dr. Herbert earned his B.S. degree in Kinesiology from Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, CA, his M.S. degree in Kinesiology from Humboldt State University, and his Ph.D. in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from The University of New Mexico.
Dr. Herbert is married to Megan Corriea, who is the Head Softball coach at Cal Poly Humboldt. Dr. Herbert and Coach Corriea are the parents of Joseph and Jackson.
Dr. Herbert left SWOCC in June of 2024 to join his wife at Cal Poly Humboldt.
