2022 Athletic Director | Coach 1973-2011

JOHN SPEASL (Former Athletic Director and coach): John started at Southwestern Oregon Community College in 1973 as a health and physical education instructor. He coached wrestling from 1973-77 and 1979-87. John was also head volleyball coach from 1979-2010. In 1986, he became SWOCC’s athletic director. In 1980 and 1981, John was name OCCAA Wrestling Coach of the Year. He was also named the NJCAA Jr. Pan American Coach in 1984, and NWAC Regional Coach of the Year in 1985, 1990 and 2005. In 1996, John was presented with the Dutch Triebwasser Award, given to the NWAC’s most outstanding administrator. In the fall 2010, Southwestern Oregon’s home court for basketball, volleyball and wrestling were named in his honor. 2011 Speasl was inducted into the NWAC Hall of Fame. 2014 he was inducted into the Southern Oregon University Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2018 he was inducted into the Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma. On March 7, 2020, John was also inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.
