The Inaugural Women’s Track & Field Team (1976-77) and the College’s First National Champion - Joy (Moore) Hall were one in the same. Hall was a wife, mother and full-time student while competing on the track and field team at Southwestern. Her career began in the fall of 1974 when she graduated from Bandon High School. Joy was the only member of the Inaugural Women’s Track & Field Team in 1976-77 and was the first National Champion/All-American for the College. Joy competed in several field events, but threw the javelin for a record 149’2” to secure the National Championship honors. A discuss throw of 128’3” was good enough for 3rd place while her shot put was 37’7” and placed her in 7th at the National Junior College Women’s Track meet in Dodge City, Kansas. Joy was a long time resident of Bandon and succumbed to cancer in March 2015. She was known as an athlete but was also artistic, a hard worker, and a homemaker.
