Varsity Baseball - 4 years and

Basketball - 3 years. Played on the 1952 WHS Athletic Hall of Fame basketball team Holds WHS record for 31 wins in a season (31-3) and finished as a sectional runner-up in a single class state tournament.

Legendary baseball player and manager beyond high school including more than 2050 wins as the Waterloo Warriors, Buds, and Millers amateur baseball team player and manager. As a player/manager Vern batted .461 in 1961

and won the Mon-Clair league batting title

2003 inductee to the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame
