PETER MENKE
Athletic Director
Peter Menke is being inducted posthumously. Mr. Menke was the Athletic Director at Winston Churchill High School from 1989 to 1997. In 1990, he was named MCPS Athletic Director of the Year. From 1992-94, he served as the President of the Maryland State Athletic Director’s Association. In 1992, he was voted the MSADA’s State Athletic Director of the Year, and in 1999 he was named to the MSADA Hall of Fame. As an Athletic Director, he used his position to fight for girls’ sports to get equal attention and resources. He also coached in MCPS. After his career in MCPS, Mr. Menke became mayor of the town of Barnesville in 2001, a position in which he served until his passing in January of 2011. Mr. Menke retired finally as the Athletic Director of Paul IV Catholic High School in Fairfax, Virginia, where the Peter T. Menke Scholar-Athlete award was named in his memory and awarded to the senior who most exemplifies Mr. Menke’s characteristics of positivity, loyalty, honestly, and fairness.
