2021 IHSAA State Champions Owen Schafer - 400 Meter State Champion (48.36) 4x400 Meter Relay State Champions - Owen Schafer, Andrew William, Thomas Mauerer, Colton Parker (3:18.90) IHSAA boys track meet: Carmel depth overcomes Brownsburg's John Colquitt for state title David Woods Indianapolis Star INDIANAPOLIS – Until 2015, Carmel had one team state championship in boys track and field. That tied schools like Monticello and Fairmount Academy. Now, Carmel runs... well, like Greyhounds. That they have built a program beyond distance runners has been underscored by a fourth title in the past six state meets, all under coach Ken Browner. “Track, it’s insanely hard to win a team state championship,” sophomore distance star Kole Mathison said. “To have so many moving pieces fit together, all in one day.” Brownsburg applied pressure, thanks to junior John Colquitt nearly pulling off a historic triple victory. Then Carmel scored 25 points in the last two events for a 68-40 margin Friday night over Brownsburg, which until then trailed by three points. Brownsburg's finish was its highest ever, surpassing a third place from 1916. Center Grove was third with 38 points, all in the sprints. Carmel won two events, both involving Owen Schafer. He was first in the 400 meters in 48.36 seconds, and his leadoff in the 1,600-meter relay gave the Greyhounds a lead they never relinquished. “It was our depth and training overall that powered us to a state championship,” Schafer said. “In the end, that’s all that matters.” Owen Schafer of Carmel pushes off the starting blocks during the 1600 meter relay during the IHSAA boys track and field state finals, Friday, June 4, 2021, at Ben Davis High School, Indianapolis. The Carmel Greyhounds took home first in the team meet. Because of the pandemic, Indiana University declined to be host site, so Ben Davis High School took it on admirably. West football stands were nearly full, and attendance (not announced) appeared to surpass what can be accommodated in Bloomington. In the 3,200 relay, junior Keefer Soehngen ran a 1:51.16 anchor for Fishers, whose time of 7:42.46 is fastest in the nation this year. Mathison ran a 1:53.48 third leg for Carmel, which ranks fourth in the nation at 7:44.83. Carmel’s Mathison and Jacob Fisher were second and third in 9:01.55 and 9:11.46. Mathison called it an “amazing” race by Fisher, who was 21st in state cross-country and 40 seconds behind Steury. Steury, who had run a state-leading 8:55.07, faded to fourth in 9:13.81. Marshall and Guerra both dropped out on the sixth lap. Team race turned out not to be close. Carmel’s 68 points have been exceeded just once since 2006 (Lawrence Central 78 in 2012). Schafer (49.5), Parker (49.9), Andrew Willman (49.8) and Thomas Maurer (49.8) capped Carmel’s day with a 3:18.90 in the 1,600 relay. Warren Central (41.70), Center Grove (41.79) and Carmel (41.81) were 1-2-3 in the 400 relay. The Greyhounds scored 25 points in three relays and totaled two firsts, three seconds and three thirds.
