'48 '07 Football | Basketball | Track
A 1948 Taylor graduate, Larry received seven varsity letters football (1), basketball (3) and track (3). He was outstanding in all three sports with greater skills in basketball and track. Larry received all-league and all-city honors in track in 1948. During the same year he set the pole vault record which carried him to the regional track meet. Basketball was his first love. Larry was one of the first players in the Cincinnati area to shoot the jump shot. Larry went on to a very successful post high school career. He served in the Army from 1949 to 1953 and received numerous awards from Generals and Colonels in track, basketball and softball. In the fall of '53 Larry attended Cedarville College where he was first string in football and basketball. He transferred to Ball State University in Muncie, In., and the next year and had an outstanding career. He lettered two years in football and four years in track. While at Ball State, he broke a seventeen year record by throwing the javelin 193 feet 65/8 inches. He then broke his own record with a throw of 194.6 feet. This record stood for fifteen years. His track team won four straight conference championships. During his varsity football seasons, he set a record in punting. Larry taught and coached at Fairfield Middle School, Fairfield H.S. and North Dearborn H.S. in Indiana from 1958 until 1968. In '68 he and his family moved to Winter Park, Florida, where he coached football, baseball, basketball, cross county and track. Larry coached championship teams in baseball and boys and girls cross county. In addition he built a baseball field at his own expense which bears his name to this day.
