Gary was an Indiana boy and a 1961 graduate of Jeffersonville High School where he excelled in basketball, baseball and cross county. While playing basketball, he earned three varsity letters and was selected to the all-state team his junior and senior years. In baseball he lettered four years and made the all-state team two times. He also ran cross county where he added two more varsity letters and made second team all-state. After high school. Gary attended Cumberland Junior College in Tennessee and then moved on to Findlay College from which he graduated in 1966. During his college years, he continued to play basketball and baseball. In his junior and senior years. he led the baseball team in hitting. In 1966 he was the NAlAbatting champ and was selected to the first team Gary gained his coaching experience in several small high schools in north central Ohio. In the fall of 1974 he came to Taylor as a Social Studies teacher and head basketball coach. During his second year, he obtained a milestone in his coaching career by winning his 100th varsity basketball victory. Under Coach Vaughn's leadership, enthusiasm in the basketball program increased and continued throughout his tenure. Gary remained at Taylor during the rest of his career. He also coached baseball and gifs baskeibal His 1982 boys' basketball team was Hamilton County sectional champs. The 1985 team were also sectional champs and advanced to the final game in the regional tournament, the farthest any Taylor team has ever gone. He led the baseball team to the sectional finals in 1977. Throughout his long career, Gary received many honors. He coached several all-star teams, was named Ohio Class A coach of theyear in '74 and was awarded the F.J. Egner Award from Findlay College in 1985-86.
