Verne excelled in both academics and athletics at Hughes High School and at the University of Cincinnati. He played football, basketball and baseball at UC. From 1945-1953 Verne taught K-12 in the district and coached football, basketball, baseball, and track at Taylor. His greatest accomplishment was coaching the 1949 State Championship baseball team. During his career at Taylor, Verne coached twelve teams to League Championships. Coach Ullom saw in those young men at Taylor the bonding spirit of American sports and the future leaders of our communities, especially needed in the years after the war.
