John graduated from Taylor in 1949 with 15 Varsity letter - football, basketball, baseball and track. He was the leading scorer on the '49 basketball team. He made Honorable mention All-City in The Cincinnati Post-Timestar. His stellar high school career was topped off by playing on the 1949 Class B State Championship baseball team. Verne Ullom and John Brannon were his coaches at this time. In 1949 he received a Congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy. At West Point he was a four year participant in baseball and was elected team captain in 1953. He received a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Physics from Tulane University in 1964. Other scholastic completions include the Command and General Staff College, United Kingdom Joint Services Staff College in England and the U.S. Army War College. During his 31 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, he became an expert in Air Defense Artillery and missile defense. He is a Vietnam Veteran and served several assignments at the Pentagon. He became a major general and command of the US Army Air Defense Artillery Center at Fort Bliss. His final assignment was as Director of Development, Engineering and Acquisition at the Army Material Command, the Pentagon.
