Jack earned 12 varsity letters in all sports at Taylor, playing football, basketball, baseball and running track. In his senior year Jack pitched two no-hitters for the Yellowjackets. He attended Indiana University on a baseball scholarship and went out for football. Jack transferred to Miami University on a football scholarship. In 1948, he decided to further pursue his baseball career and signed with the Cincinnati Reds.
