Ed, a 1941 graduate, was an outstanding all-around athlete. He participated in five sports earning varsity letters in football (2), basketball (2), baseball (2) and tennis (1). His senior year the football team posted a 6-0 record, the basketball team was 7-2 and the track team won the county championship for the fifth consecutive year. Ed even found time to be a member of Taylor's band for four years. Ed's favorite sport was baseball. His senior year he batted .414. After graduation he went to Indiana University on an athletic scholarship. During his years at lU, he played baseball and basketball. In baseball he played centerfield along side Ted Kluszewski, who later played first base for the Cincinnati Reds. By the end of his senior year, Ed led the Big Ten in batting average.
