A 1957 Taylor graduate, Mel participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He received 8 varsity letters 3 in basketball, 2 in baseball, 2 in track and 1 in football. The basketball teams during his varsity years compiled a 41 - 18 record. Mel's senior year the basketball team posted a 17-2 season. As a senior Mel received a "winged T" signifying that he earned varsity letters in four sports. On the basketball team Mel led in rebounds his junior and senior years. He was also the top pitcher on the baseball team with a 3-1 record, along with a no-hit game to his credit. In basketball he was named first team all-league Hamilton County and capped his high school career by receiving all-city honors in the Cincinnati Post in 1957. In addition to being an outstanding high school athlete, Mel received a basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. He played center on the team with the great Oscar Robertson. In 1959 they were co-champions in the Missouri Valley Conference and went on to finish 3rd in the NCAA tournament.
