Ralph played football, basketball, and baseball for Taylor High School in the early 1940's. He was a halfback and a quarterback on the football team. Ralph excelled in baseball. While at Taylor he played second base, third base and pitched. His teams were always competitive. Ralph was the winning pitcher in the first game of the State Tournament in 1943. He also played for the Bentley Post American Legion Team that won the 1944 National Championship. Ralph passed up Big Ten Baseball scholarship offers to go on and sign a contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Ralph played football, basketball, and baseball for Taylor High School in the early 1940's.
