Taylor High School has had many great athletes in its long history and one who ranks with the best is Brian Koelling, an exciting three-sport star from 1983-1987. Brian was a three year letter winner in football, basketball and baseball. In 1986 and 1987 he was a back to back All-League and All-City performer in all three sports. On the football field, he played quarterback and punted for Coach Jim Haag and led the 1986 and 1987 teams to a combined 15-5 record. In 1987, he set the single season passing record and set the career passing record, before brother Jerry Koelling broke it. Staring in the Annual East-West All-Star Game topped off his football career. On the basketball court he played for the late Coach Gary Vaughn. As a sophomore, Brian was a member of the 1985 Sectional Championship Team, playing guard, forward and center, He lead the 1986 and 1987 teams in rebounding and scoring. On the diamond, Brian was known throughout the area for his dazzling shortstop play. He lead the 1986 team to a Class AA Sectional Championship and led the 1987 team to a Class A District Championship. Brian played in the Annual East-West AlI-Star Game and was regarded by tri-state coaches as one of the 20 best baseball prospects in 1987. Brian accepted a baseball scholarship to Bowling Green State University, where he was the Falcon's starting shortstop for four years and rewrote Bowling Green's record book. In 1991, the Cincinnati Reds drafted him and in 1993 the Reds called him up to the Major Leagues. His first game was here at Riverfront Stadium.
