Gene attended Taylor from 1934-38 and earned ten Varsity letters - football (3), basketball (2), baseball (2) track (2) and tennis (1). He was the only male athlete in the class of 1938 to letter in 5 sports. He was coached in all of the sports that he participated in by Taylor Sports Hall of Fame Coach Bob Morgan. Gene highlighted his senior year by being the leading hitter on the baseball team with a stellar 531 batting average. Gene's outstanding high school career was rewarded when he received a football scholarship to Xavier University. He played in the 1938-39 season for Coach Clem Crowe.
