John graduated from Taylor in 1960. During his high school years, he earned 10 Varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball.
He went on to Eastern Kentucky State College on a baseball scholarship receiving three Varsity letters, along with being captain and earning All-Conference honors his senior season. Upon graduation he returned to Three Rivers where he taught and coached football, basketball, baseball and track at the Junior High.
In 1969 he moved to Taylor High School as a guidance counselor and coach. John started his career as a golf coach in the spring of 1970 and compiled a 325 wins, 199 loses, and 1 tie record.
In his 25 seasons, his teams acquired 3 league championships, 7 District qualifiers and was highlighted by a second place finish at the state tournament in 1979. Since the state established divisions in golf in 1974, no other Cincinnati area team in Taylor's division has achieved a higher finish. During his tenure, he was the Cincinnati Enquirer "Coach of the Year" in 1975 and 1996, League "Coach of the Year" in 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1979. Eleven of his golfers went on to play college golf, and Dean Prowse, '80 graduate, played in the PGA Championship in 2001. Dean and Harry Alexander are also in Taylor's Sports Hall of Fame.
After retiring in 1996, John coached golf at Three Rivers Middle School for 5 seasons.
