THROUGHOUT THE STORIED HISTORY OF MCCUTCHEON ATHLETICS, THERE HAVE BEEN FEW ATHLETES WHO HAVE DISPLAYED THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE, DEDICATION, AND VERSATILITY THAT KIM CORWIN BROUGHT TO THE COURT AND THE TRACK.

AS A THREE-SPORT VARSITY LETTER WINNER IN VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL, AND TRACK, SHE WAS A STANDOUT COMPETITOR WHOSE TALENT, LEADERSHIP, AND WORK ETHIC SET HER APART AS ONE OF THE GREATEST ATHLETES TO EVER REPRESENT MCCUTCHEON HIGH SCHOOL.

KIM’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN VOLLEYBALL WERE NOTHING SHORT OF EXCEPTIONAL. A THREE-YEAR VARSITY STARTER, SHE WAS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE AND MOST VALUABLE PLAYER IN BOTH HER JUNIOR AND SENIOR SEASONS.

AS A SENIOR, SHE LED THE TEAM IN BLOCKING, SPIKING, SETTING, SERVING, AND SAVES, CAPPING OFF AN OUTSTANDING CAREER BY EARNING FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE HONORS. HER IMPACT ON THE PROGRAM SET A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF MAVERICKS.HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN BASKETBALL WERE EQUALLY IMPRESSIVE. AS A THREE-YEAR VARSITY STARTER, KIM WAS RECOGNIZED AS AN INDIANA ALL-STAR, AN ALL-STATE HONOREE, AND A TWO-TIME ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTION. SHE WAS THE TEAM’S MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AS A SENIOR, AND HER NAME REMAINS AMONG THE GREATEST IN MCCUTCHEON BASKETBALL HISTORY:

HER ABILITY TO DOMINATE IN MULTIPLE SPORTS DID NOT GO UNNOTICED, AS KIM CONTINUED HER ATHLETIC CAREER AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY, WHERE SHE WAS A THREE-YEAR VARSITY STARTER IN VOLLEYBALL.

SHE EARNED SECOND TEAM ALL-BIG TEN HONORS AS BOTH A JUNIOR AND SENIOR, AND HER CONTRIBUTIONS HELPED PURDUE SECURE TWO BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS. ADDITIONALLY, SHE WAS RECOGNIZED FOR HER EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSROOM AS AN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN SELECTION.

KIM'S LEGACY IS THAT OF PERSEVERANCE, TALENT, AND AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE. YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO MCCUTCHEON ATHLETICS REMAIN A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, AND YOUR IMPACT IS STILL FELT BY THOSE WHO HAVE FOLLOWED IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS.

1983 - Purdue goes 26-6 and again coasts through the Big Ten regular season with a 13-0 mark in the East Division for first place ... the Boilermakers beat Iowa in the conference tournament before losing to Northwestern in the finals ... they defeat Illinois State in the NCAA Tournament first round, then host the Mideast Regional and fall to Western Michigan in the semifinals before a Multi-Purpose Athletic Facility (now IAF) record crowd of 1,862 to tie for ninth place nationally ... Purdue sets a school match record with a .560 hitting percentage vs. Notre Dame on Sept. 8 while playing its shortest match in history at 41 minutes ... Purdue sets a school match record with 18 Solo Blocks vs. Northwestern on Oct. 15 ... Annette Bauer is named first team All-Big Ten, and Kate Crandell, Jan Hoosline and Joan King are second team ... Crandell and Kim Corwin are named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team ... Hoosline is named third team Academic All-American ... Crandell is chosen for the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival team, and Becky Winsett is selected to the Athletes in Action team ... Marianne Smith leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage with a .363 mark in conference matches and Hoosline ties for the lead with 32 service aces ... Crandell sets a school match record with eight solo blocks vs. Pittsburgh on Oct. 7 ... Hoosline finishes her career with a school-record 228 service aces ... Purdue is ranked No. 7 nationally, the highest ranking ever in its history, the week of Nov. 15.

1984 - The Boilermakers are 25-12 ... Big Ten dominance continues as they go 10-3, finish first in the East Division and improve their regular-season record to 36-3 over the last three seasons ... Purdue hosts the conference tournament and, for the second straight year, downs Iowa before losing to Northwestern in the finals ... Purdue closes the regular season with a Thanksgiving trip to California and defeats San Jose State and California on consecutive nights after being down 2-0 ... the Boilermakers lose at San Jose State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament ... Kate Crandell and Marianne Smith are first team All-Big Ten, and Annette Bauer and Kim Corwin earn second team honors ... Crandell earns all-conference laurels for the fourth straight year ... Smith is the Big Ten Player of the Year and second team All-American ... she sets a school season record with 93 service aces with her famed jump serve ... Bauer is first team Academic All-American ... Corwin is chosen for the USA Junior National team ... the Boilermakers tally a school season record of 451 total blocks ... Bauer ends her career with a school record of 4,568 assists while playing every point of every match, and Crandell finishes her career with a school record of 223 solo blocks.

1985 - The Boilermakers return to the 30-win plateau and claim their fourth overall Big Ten championship and third in the first six seasons of the 1980s ... they finish 34-4 overall and are 17-1 in the first year of conference double round-robin play ... Purdue opens the season with 13 straight wins ... the Boilermakers set an NCAA attendance record with a crowd of 10,645 against Western Michigan for Pac Mac on Oct. 29 in Mackey Arena and set a Big Ten record with a crowd of 3,279 against Illinois on Nov. 5 in Mackey ... Purdue downs Illinois State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, then loses to Nebraska in the Mideast Regional semifinals to tie for ninth place nationally ... Marianne Smith sets school match records with nine service aces vs. Butler on Sept. 13 and 32 kills at Texas A&M on Oct. 12 ... the Boilermakers record 89 assists against Texas A&M ... Linda Reichl has 75 total attempts at Ohio State on Nov. 23 ... Smith is the Big Ten Player of the Year for the second straight season and Purdue's first-ever first team All-American ... she is runner-up for Big Ten Athlete of the Year honors and is selected for the World University Student Games team ... Smith sets a school season record with 212 total blocks and leads the Big Ten in kills with an average of 4.30 in conference matches ... Reichl and Kim Corwin are second team All-Big Ten, and Cheryl Flowers is honorable mention ... Flowers is a second team Academic All-America choice ... Reichl is named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team ... she is chosen for the U.S. Junior National and U.S. Olympic Sports Festival teams ... Carol Dewey shares Big Ten Coach of the Year honors ... Smith finishes her career with a school record 567 total blocks.

Kim Corwin, McCutcheon

McCutcheon had several standout female athletes during its early days as a high school and in the immediate years after Title IX. Corwin was one of those, starring in volleyball, track and basketball. The 1982 Indiana All-Star basketball player would become a standout in volleyball at Purdue University, collecting 1,087 career kills, 1,145 digs, 139 aces and 135 blocks while helping the Boilermakers win a Big Ten championship.
