St. Thomas High School

For 18 years, Mike has exemplified the very best of St. Thomas High School, guiding 9 of 12 athletic programs to 23 state championships, earning 12 All-Sports Trophies, and shaping more than 20% of all titles won since the school’s founding in 1900.

A champion of both athletic and academic excellence, he elevated the Eagle Scholar Awards to state and national prominence and built a culture grounded in leadership, integrity, and opportunity for all. Netzel’s inclusive approach to coaching hires—expanding diversity, breaking barriers, and strengthening every program—has been matched by his vision for student-athlete support, including new training staff, a dedicated strength and conditioning coordinator, and a state-of-the-art athletic training facility.

Throughout these achievements, even while battling cancer, Mike remained a steadfast mentor, leader, and example of goodness, discipline, and knowledge, enriching the St. Thomas community on and off the field.
