JOHN HANDEL

Athletic Director

Elkhorn Area High School

John consistently elevates the athletic culture at his school by empowering coaches, supporting student-athletes, and leading with integrity across every program. Four years ago, he launched the Champions101 leadership program, providing athletes, parents, and coaches with consistent expectations and tools to strengthen team culture. This initiative has improved communication, increased parent buy-in, and fostered a sense of community while helping grow multiple athletic programs. Under his leadership, student participation has expanded, game-day experiences have improved, and Booster Club partnerships contributed over $30,000 to support athletes and coaches. Notably, John has also introduced two new WIAA sports—boys lacrosse and girls wrestling—enhancing opportunities for students.

John ensures every athlete has access to a meaningful experience through no-cut programs, multi-sport encouragement, and character development initiatives. His Champions101 framework creates a unified culture across all teams, improving alignment, accountability, and sportsmanship. Additionally, he has modernized communication systems using Bound and Gipper, streamlined eligibility and academic support processes, and established consistent operational practices for coaches and families. Recognized as WIAA District 6 Athletic Director of the Year, John’s forward-thinking approach, dedication, and servant leadership have strengthened both athletics and the broader school community.
