ROB WEIDENBURNER

Athletic Director

Apex High School

Rob exemplifies tireless dedication, going far beyond traditional administrative duties to personally maintain fields through sweltering summer heat, build an exceptional coaching staff, and foster a culture of integrity that has elevated Apex into a top regional contender. He designed an innovative athletic administration curriculum that gives students hands-on experience across budgeting, scheduling, compliance, and event management, while also mentoring them to understand the ethical and leadership dimensions of running a program. In transforming a program previously plagued with ethical challenges, Rob rebuilt the department culture with transparency and accountability, establishing Apex as a respected competitor across all sports. He actively engages students and the community by involving student artists in projects like a custom-decorated volleyball honoring the school’s all-time digs leader, and by inviting local officials, including the town mayor, to participate in pre-game ceremonies and coin tosses, creating memorable moments that unite the entire community. As a leader, Rob spearheaded a full athletic department rebrand with cohesive logos, uniforms, and digital presence, while driving strategic fundraising that funded new shooting machines for basketball, branded hurdles for track, and a planned golf simulator. He currently leads a capital campaign to install a digital video scoreboard in the outdoor stadium. Nationally certified as one of only 17 athletic administrators in Wake County, Rob continually pursues professional development, including attending the 2024 Educators Workshop at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and demonstrates extraordinary service by spearheading support for a hurricane-impacted high school in Asheville, NC. From his early work as the inaugural athletic director at Alston Ridge Middle School to his transformative leadership at Apex, Rob’s career is defined by innovation, mentorship, and a relentless commitment to developing both athletic programs and the students they serve.
