JOHN TAYLOR

Athletic Director

Burlington Township High School

Dr. John Taylor has devoted his life to ensuring all students can participate in education-based athletics, often going above and beyond—personally providing financial support to help families afford associated costs. As Athletic Director at Irvington High School (2017–2024), he brought golf to a school serving many low-income students by securing sponsorships to cover costs, establishing separate boys’ and girls’ teams, and opening networking and life opportunities through the sport. He also partnered with school administration to create a plan allowing NCAA-bound student-athletes to graduate in the first semester of their senior year, enabling them to enroll early in college and participate in spring practices—benefiting athletes like Notre Dame safety Adon Shuler and University of Kentucky cornerback Nasir Addison. Dr. Taylor’s commitment to equity and inclusion extends beyond traditional sports: he spearheaded an e-sports program that now serves 75–100 students annually and established “Future Blue Knight” visits, connecting high school athletes with K–5 students to model academic success, responsible decision-making, and community engagement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Taylor went above and beyond—prepping fields, washing uniforms, and performing custodial duties—to ensure students could safely participate in athletics despite staffing shortages. Having grown up in public housing, he understands the barriers students face and consistently ensures that no financial obstacle prevents participation, from footwear to meals. His extraordinary dedication has earned national recognition, including the 2022 Varsity Brands/BSN National High School Athletic Director of the Year, inclusion on Coach & AD Magazine’s “40 Under 40,” and being named New Jersey State Teacher of the Year in 2016. Dr. Taylor’s leadership, compassion, and relentless advocacy have transformed the Irvington athletic community, creating opportunities and support systems that impact students far beyond the playing field.
