STEPHANIE JOHNSON

Athletic Director

Goucher College

Stephanie arrived at Goucher at one of the most pivotal moments in the history of the athletics department, stepping into a landscape marked by significant staff turnover, outdated facilities, and deeply tangled budgetary and operational inefficiencies—and within months, transformed it with unmatched energy, clarity, and purpose. Starting in June, she immediately began rebuilding the department’s culture through her constant visibility, her genuine availability to coaches and student-athletes, and her unwavering commitment to person-first, servant-minded leadership. While offering mentorship rooted in her extensive coaching background, she also took decisive action to overhaul internal systems: uncovering thousands of dollars in previously unused funds, reorganizing budget lines and game-management procedures, improving hiring practices, and dramatically increasing facility revenue through outside partnerships and strengthened donor relations. Simultaneously, she accelerated long-overdue facility projects—including floor resurfacing, new locker rooms, upgraded bleachers, and the pursuit of a second turf field—while cultivating vital cross-campus relationships by consistently bringing campus partners into the athletics conversation. Whether stepping in to keep score at volleyball matches, absorbing operations responsibilities after a sudden staff departure, or simply asking coaches how she can better support them as professionals and people, Stephanie leads with action, humility, and conviction. In her first year as an Athletic Director, she has not only stabilized a department in crisis—she has inspired trust, restored belief, and set Goucher Athletics firmly on a path toward long-term excellence, proving herself the transformative leader the program needed to truly put Goucher on the map.
