MEKIA TROY
Athletic Director
Creekside High School
Mekia embodies the very highest ideals of athletic leadership—tireless, principled, compassionate, and deeply rooted in the community she serves—while carrying the rare combination of experience, integrity, and vision that has defined her seventeen-year tenure as the first African American woman to serve as Athletic Director at her alma mater. A former athlete and coach, she leads with both heart and firsthand understanding, recognizing the struggles her students face and consistently going above and beyond to support them, often sacrificing her own rest to ensure their needs are met. Her fairness is unwavering: she advocates fiercely for what is right, offering honest guidance without sugarcoating, earning the respect of athletes, colleagues, families, and the broader community who trust her judgment and feel the impact of her genuine care. In addition to shaping young people on campus, she serves children through her church and remains a mentor to countless former students who still look up to her years later. Even while pursuing and earning her doctoral degree—never missing a beat in her AD responsibilities—she continued to expand her influence nationally through her work with the NIAAA, teaching at conferences across the country and abroad, and recently publishing her first book, Teachable Moments, which has been adopted by school districts nationwide as a leadership resource. Frequently sought after by ADs across the United States for her insight and guidance, Mekia has earned the State Merit Award in Georgia and an extraordinary eight Athletic Director of the Year honors at both the region and state levels. Though she rarely pauses to take a true break, her dedication has left an enduring mark on her school, her community, and the profession at large—showcasing a leader whose impact reaches far beyond the walls of her athletics department and into the lives of all who are fortunate enough to learn from her.
