Firman Walden

Firman Walden serves as Head Coach for both Indoor and Outdoor Track. With over 40 years of experience as an elite athlete, championship coach, trainer, and business owner, Firman has shaped the track and field landscape at several schools.

As a high school athlete at Overbrook High in Pine Hill, New Jersey, Firman excelled in football, basketball, and track & field. He is a two-time state champion in the 110-meter-high hurdles and played a crucial role on the state champion 4×400-meter relay team. The records he set in 1986 for the 110HH (14.0), 400IH (53.49), and 4×400-meter relay (3:17.69) remain unbeaten today.

Firman continued his career at UNC-Chapel Hill, earning an athletic scholarship in track & field and majoring in Physical Education. After graduating, he became the Hurdle Coach and Assistant Sprint Coach at Apex High School under legendary Coach Roy Cooper.

From 1990 to 1995, Firman helped Apex emerge as the top track program in the Tri-6 Conference.In 1997, Firman joined Cary High as Sprint/Hurdle Coach, leading the Imps to remarkable success. In 2002, he was promoted to Boys Head Track & Field Coach. Firman retired from coaching after the 2005 season to focus on his personal training business, but his passion for coaching endured.

In 2010, Firman took on the challenge of rebuilding Green Hope Track & Field. Under his guidance, nearly every school record at Green Hope has been broken, spanning all disciplines. Producing over 16 All-Americans, three State Champion Teams, two State Runner-Up finishes, and three third-place teams.

In 2019, Firman accepted the Head Track & Field Coaching position at brand new Green Level High School. Since that time, Firman has coached several conference champions, conference meet MVP’s and regional champions, as well as Green Level’s 1st Track & Field State Medalist and All-American.Firman’s coaching has led to numerous individual & relay State Champions, a State Meet MVP, numerous Conference MVPs, and many athletes who continued their track and field careers at the collegiate level.

His achievements have earned him Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2004, 2005, and 2013, and in 2018, he received the North Carolina Boys Track & Field Coach of the Year award from the U.S. Cross Country Track & Field Coaches Association.
