Biography:
Jim Curry, Class of 1958, earned 12 Varsity Letters in a 3-year High School; Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. In football, he scored 3 touchdowns in his debut. As a junior, Jim ran a 38 Special option and threw an 84-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 24-yard rushing TD to lead the Rockets to a 13-0 win over Gibson City in the Downstate Game of the Year. Against rival Monticello, he rushed for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 3 additional touchdowns being called back. In basketball, Jim helped lead Unity to a 21-5 and 22-2 record, winning the Okaw Valley Championship in 1958. In the days before 3-pointers, Jim played in two games in which each scored over 100 points. Their wins over Champaign and Urbana were huge because back then, there was only one class. On the track, Jim anchored the 440 and 880 relays as well as ran the 100 and 200 yard dash all 3 years, helping Unity capture back-to-back County and Okaw Valley Titles in 1957 and 1958. At their peak, Unity was ranked 5th in the state in the 880 relay, only behind powerhouse Chicago teams. Jim has always been proud to be a Rocket
