2000 - UNITYS BRIAN CARDINAL IS DRAFTED BY THE DETROIT PISTONS
Brian Lee Cardinal was born on May 2, 1977, in Tolono, Illinois. He attended Unity High School, where he was a standout basketball player for the Rockets, scoring at a high level and helping lead the team to an 86–25 record during his high-school career. As a senior, he averaged 24.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game and was recognized as one of the top high-school seniors in the nation, earning MVP honors in all-star games.
After graduating from Unity in 1995, Cardinal played college basketball at Purdue University. At Purdue he became a four-year starter, team captain, and one of the program’s all-time leaders in steals and points. His hustle and energy on the court earned him the nicknames “the Custodian” and “the Janitor.”
Cardinal was selected in the second round of the 2000 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons and enjoyed a 12-season professional career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), playing for several teams including the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he won an NBA Championship in 2011.
After retiring from professional basketball, Cardinal returned to Purdue Athletics in a staff role working in external relations and supporting the John Purdue Club and mentoring student-athletes.
His legacy at Unity High School, Purdue, and in the NBA highlights Cardinal’s enduring impact as a hard-working competitor and local sports legend from Tolono.
