1994 - UHS HIRES SCOTT HAMILTON

Early Life & Playing Background

Scott Hamilton grew up in Roxana, Illinois, where he was a standout high-school football player.

As a senior quarterback and defensive back at Roxana, he helped lead the team to deep playoff runs in the mid-1980s, including a semifinal appearance in 1986.

Coaching Beginnings

Hamilton began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Calhoun High School (Hardin, IL) in the early 1990s.

At Calhoun he was part of a coaching staff that won back-to-back IHSA Class 1A state championships in 1992 and 1993, helping build his reputation as a rising coach.

Head Coach at Unity High School (1994–2024)

Taking the Helm

Hamilton was hired as head football coach at Unity High School in 1994 — his first head coaching position at a high school.

Turning Around the Program

Before his arrival, Unity’s football program had a sub-.500 record over the prior three seasons.

In his first season, Hamilton led the Rockets to a 7-3 record, and by his second season they went 8-2 — marking a rapid turnaround.

Sustained Success

Over 31 seasons at Unity, Hamilton built the Rockets into one of Central Illinois’ most successful high school programs:

Career Record: 291–74 at Unity.

Playoff Appearances: Made the IHSA postseason in 29 of 31 seasons coaching the Rockets.

State Championship Games: Led Unity to six IHSA state title game appearances — in 2000, 2005, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2021 — finishing as runner-up each time.

Consistent Winning: Unity had only one losing season under Hamilton (4-5 in 2018) and only twice missed the playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic structure in spring 2021.

Playoff Wins: Accumulated dozens of playoff victories, including deep runs into quarterfinals and semifinals across multiple classifications.

Coaching Style & Legacy

Hamilton’s teams were known for discipline, physical play, and a strong offense that adapted over time, including spread formations and balanced attack strategies.

He coached and mentored thousands of student-athletes, emphasizing fundamentals, teamwork, and academic accountability.

Beyond coaching football, Hamilton served as Unity’s athletic director and was a math teacher, deeply integrated into school life for decades.

Honors

In 2017, Hamilton was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his long achievement and leadership in high school football.

He was also recognized through state coaching awards, including an IHSA NFHS Coach of the Year nomination.

Retirement

After 31 years as Unity’s head coach, Hamilton announced his retirement following the 2024 season — concluding one of the most enduring and successful careers in Illinois high school football history.
