🏟️ Naming of the Football Field

In 1979, the Unity High School football field was officially named Hicks Field in honor of Oscar Hicks, recognizing his long service and impact on the school’s athletics program. That same year he was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his coaching achievements.

Since that dedication, “Hicks Field” has been the home site of the Unity Rockets’ football games and a central venue for Friday night high school football in the community. Long-time players and fans often speak of “Friday nights under the lights at Hicks Field” as a memorable part of the school’s athletic culture.

🏆 Legacy and Impact

The naming of Hicks Field reflects more than just wins and losses:

Hicks helped build a strong tradition in Unity football and athletics that continued under later coaches such as Scott Hamilton, whose teams have continued to make IHSA playoff and state-championship appearances.

The field’s name serves as a lasting tribute to his decades of leadership—not just in football but across multiple sports and roles at the school.
