Knights of Destiny: The Unforgettable Rise of Noble High’s 1997 Football Team

The 1997 Noble High School football team carved its name into history by completing a legendary season that culminated in a Class A State Championship. The campaign began on September 5 with a dominant 38-12 win over Sanford, setting the tone for a remarkable journey. That night also marked the first time the team entered the field to John Mellencamp’s “Small Town,” a symbolic anthem for a group of underdogs with big dreams. Despite a close loss the following week to two-time defending state champion South Portland, the Knights made a vow to return and seek revenge, setting up what would become one of the most iconic moments in Maine football history.Throughout the regular season, Noble proved itself against traditional powerhouses. A historic first-ever win over Biddeford came on September 19, when linebacker Jeff Chandler preserved the 24-21 victory with a clutch tackle in the final seconds. The Knights then rolled through Massabesic, Thornton Academy, Bonny Eagle, and Edward Little with commanding wins, showcasing their balanced offense and ferocious defense. Their only other regular season loss came in controversial fashion to archrival Marshwood, where a disputed spot by a local official denied Noble a potential game winning drive. The playoffs marked Noble’s ascent into greatness as they would have to battle past Biddeford and South Portland, who had won every state title in the decade. On November 1, they earned their first-ever Class A playoff win by shutting out Thornton Academy 15-0. A week later, the Knights stunned 11-time state champion Biddeford 14-0 in front of thousands of fans so loud the team could not hear their entrance music when taking the field. The emotional win was sealed with a team hug that left no dry eyes on the field, as Noble made school history on a single, wonderful afternoon. The Western Maine Final on November 17 delivered a game for the ages. Against all odds, Noble upset the two time reigning state champions South Portland in overtime, 10-7, on a clutch 27-yard field goal by Troy Brown that followed a touchdown set up by a trick play by Noble in the first quarter. A snowstorm on Saturday postponed the game until Monday. The snowy field and Monday night lights only added to the lore, as Noble ended South Portland’s 26-game unbeaten streak in what is still regarded as one of the greatest upsets in Maine high school sports history. Finally, on November 24 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Noble capped its Cinderella season with a resounding 35-7 win over Gardiner to claim the Class A State Championship. The victory, delayed by yet another snowstorm, sparked celebrations that continue to this day. The legacy of the 1997 Noble Knights lives on, not just as champions, but as a team that inspired a group of small towns and proved that resilience, courage, and friendship can achieve the seemingly impossible.
