Coaches
My name is John Ruzzo, and I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. Growing up, I learned the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseveranceβvalues that have continued to shape my life and career.
I attended Cardinal Dougherty High School, where I continued to develop both academically and personally. After high school, I furthered my education by attending Penn State University and Temple University, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. Throughout my educational journey, I was fortunate to receive scholarships and grants for both my academic achievements and my accomplishments on the tennis court.
Tennis has been a major part of my life for nearly 35 years. I started playing tennis when I was just four years old, and the sport quickly became much more than just a hobby. Tennis taught me discipline, responsibility, competition, and the importance of setting goals and working toward them.
My passion for tennis eventually led me into coaching. I began teaching tennis at the age of 16 and have had the opportunity to teach players throughout the Philadelphia area for approximately 25 years. Coaching has allowed me to share my love of the game with players of all ages and skill levels. More importantly, it has given me the opportunity to mentor young athletes and help them develop confidence, discipline, and life skills that extend beyond the tennis court.
Today, I work in security at William Tennent High School, where I am also fortunate to coach both the Boys and Girls Varsity Tennis teams. Being able to work with students every day and coach the sport that has been such an important part of my life is something I truly value.
Throughout my life, tennis has opened many doors for me, from educational opportunities through scholarships and grants to the relationships and experiences I have gained through playing and coaching. After nearly 35 years as a player and 25 years as a coach, tennis continues to be an important part of who I am.
Looking back, I am proud of the journey I have taken. From growing up in Northeast
Philadelphia to earning my college degree, building a career in security, and dedicating decades to teaching and coaching tennis, each experience has helped shape the person I am today. I look forward to continuing to work with young people, sharing my knowledge of tennis, and making a positive difference in the lives of the students and athletes I have the opportunity to coach.
