Akia Pruitt
CLASS OF 2016
Akia Pruitt was a steady and unselfish leader for the RJ Reynolds basketball program, known as much for his quiet approach as for his production on the court.
A low-key competitor, Akia led by example—consistently putting the team first while elevating those around him. His leadership style was not vocal or flashy, but it was impactful, as he helped guide the Demons through one of their most successful seasons in recent history.
During his senior year, Akia earned All-Conference, All-Region, and Central Piedmont Conference Player of the Year honors while leading the Demons to a 23–5 record and a second-round appearance in the state playoffs. He averaged 13.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 2.2 assists per game, shooting 63 percent from the field and recording multiple double-doubles. His presence on the defensive end, particularly as a shot blocker and interior defender, set the tone for the team.
One of the defining moments of his senior season came during the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic, where Akia was named tournament MVP. He recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks in the semifinal win, followed by a dominant 26-point, 15-rebound performance in the championship game to secure the title.
Akia’s growth over his career was evident, as he developed into a reliable and consistent force who could impact the game in multiple ways. His willingness to focus on defense, rebounding, and team success made him a cornerstone of the program.
He continued his basketball career at UNC Pembroke, then professionally in Israel, Mexico, Slovakia, Venezuela, and Uruguay.
