Yves Michel
Yves R. Michel serves as the Junior Varsity Head Coach for the Apex High School Women’s Basketball program, bringing more than three decades of experience in athletics, leadership, and youth development. Originally from Queens, New York, Coach Michel was a multi-sport athlete growing up, competing in soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, and football, and later played shooting guard and point guard in high school. He holds an MBA in Banking and Finance from Hofstra University and has completed postgraduate leadership and teaching certifications from Stanford University, Harvard University, and Cornell University.
Coach Michel’s coaching philosophy centers on putting the athlete first and building success through teamwork, effort, and accountability. He believes in meeting athletes where they are and guiding them forward with compassion, high standards, expertise, and encouragement. His approach emphasizes leadership development, confidence, and growth on and off the court, creating an environment where players feel supported, challenged, and motivated to become the best version of themselves—now and in the future.
Coach Michel has coached basketball at every level, including youth, middle school, high school, and AAU programs across New York, California, and North Carolina. One of his most meaningful experiences has been coaching all four of his children and watching them grow into outstanding individuals through the life lessons learned in athletics—a perspective he brings to every athlete he coaches. What he enjoys most about coaching at Apex is the opportunity to positively impact young people through pride, accomplishment, and personal growth. Outside of basketball, Coach Michel values faith, family, friends, and fun, and brings energy and creativity to the program—having once been a DJ and still maintaining a love for all genres of music.
