2018 Class 4A State Champions

One year removed from the streak of State Tournament appearances in a double overtime thriller at the hands of of the Kingfisher Yellowjackets, the 2018 Chargers came back with a renewed fire. With a tough schedule to begin the year, the boys started off 5-5 after back-to-back losses in the Putnam City Invitational, one to eventual 6A State Champion and nationally-ranked Putnam City North and another to Putnam City in OT. The PC loss would end up being the Chargers' last of the season, as they went on to rattle off 17 wins in a row to set up a finals matchup with undefeated Kingfisher, with revenge on their minds from the year before. In one of the classic championship games of recent years, the affair was a back and forth battle, headlined by then-Freshman Trey Alexander '21, until late in the fourth quarter when the Chargers called a timeout as time waned. Out of the timeout, Jon Matthews '18 beat his man to get down into the lane and as help defense came, he found fellow senior Blake Horrell '18 open in the corner. The lefty sharpshooter buried the corner three to give the Chargers the lead. A stop and then two free throws to seal it, and the Chargers raised the gold ball!
