1987 TEAM

1987 Class 3A Team Champions

The 80's were not as affluent as the 90's would end up being, but no one is going to scoff at 3 State Championships in a decade. The '87 team's success was build on the back of a 1986 Runner-Up finish and the addition of freshman Brian Bethea '91. Just before the State Tournament, Coach Dick Villaflor made the call to pull junior Peter Burroughs '88 from the #2 Singles spot and pair him with the talented freshman. This call, plus Lance Vervack '89's efforts at #2 Doubles catapulted the Chargers to the overall championship. The 1987 season was the first championship since the spring of 1981 and was a precursor for what would be one of the most dominant decades in state tennis history.
