Edward Sim has been a police officer, firefighter, and emergency medical technician in the Town of Colonie. He started with the Town of Colonie Police Department as a dispatcher in 1977 and became an officer in 1981.

As a member of the Colonie Fire Department since 1975, Sim served as chief from 1982-84 and again from 1988-92. He was president of the Colonie Fire Department.

In 1979 he was honored as Officer of the Year and, in 1987, was designated as Firefighter of the Year by his department.
