Gail Stevenson, a storied Field Hockey coach for Rye Neck, left her mark on Rye Neck and women’s sports during her tenure as Field Hockey Coach. Stevenson was an advocate for women’s sports. She was the originator and first chairperson for Women’s Interscholastic Athletics for Section 1 Sports starting during the 1973-1974 school year. Her advocacy had and still continue to have a lasting impact on women’s sports today.
On the pitch, Stevenson was just as powerful of a force as she was in her advocacy efforts. During her tenure as Field Hockey Coach, she had a record of 327-35-26. At the time, this earned Stevenson the National High School Field Hockey Coaching Record for most wins. She also earned other prestigious accolades including Section 1 Coach of the Year in 1982, 1985, and 1989 and was a 14-time Conference Coach of the Year. During her storied career, Stevenson coached four All-American players and 15 ConEd award winning players. Under her watch, the Panthers won 17 League Championships, 9 Sectional Championships, 5 Regional Championships, an Easter State Championship in 1982, were NY State Semifinalists in 1985 and 1988, and won a NY State Championship in 1984. Her career was full of success and countless victories. Stevenson will go down in history as one of the Field Hockey coaching greats and a pioneer of the sport in Section 1 Athletics.
