2015 1972 Gymnastics Athlete

Shelly, a class of 1972 graduate, was an all-around athlete. A four year varsity field hockey player, Shelly was a key member of one of the school’s first undefeated teams.  Her senior year she was the captain and leading scorer on the team. Shelly also displayed her athleticism as a member of the lacrosse team and cheerleading squad.

But, it is in gymnastics where Shelly’s mark is indelible.  A five year participant, Shelly was a pioneer of Section One gymnastics.  A true competitor, she dominated most meets winning countless events.  At the Southern Westchester Divisionals in her senior year, she won every event she entered: horse, floor exercise, uneven bars and balance beam. She also earned the title of top All-Around Gymnast in Southern Westchester.

Her prowess in the gymnasium garnered her many honors at a time when gymnastics, and women’s sport, in general, received little recognition.  Most notably, Shelly was a Con Edison Award winner, Rye Neck’s first female to receive the honor and one of the first women in the county to be honored with the prestigious award.
