Charlie McEvily
Charlie McEvily, a 1985 graduate of Rye Neck High School, was a three-sport athlete who made a lasting impact on the athletic program.
During his three year tenure on the varsity basketball team, Charlie was known as a scrappy player who could control the boards. In his senior year, the captain averaged 10 rebounds and 10 points per game earning him All-League Honorable Mention status.
On the baseball diamond, he was even more impressive. A two-time captain, Charlie was known for his control on the mound, tossing a no-hitter and a one hitter. In his senior year, his ERA was 2.07 with 73 strikeouts. He was also solid at the plate as a senior, batting .395 while punching in 28 runs with six doubles, five triples and three homeruns, totaling five for his career. His performance earned him a second All-League nod and All-Section honors. He was also recognized as a Daily News All-Star his senior year.
It was, however, on the gridiron where Charlie McEvily best excelled. The tight end was a force to be reckoned with tearing up the field with his speed, and as one newspaper article described it, his “gutsy catches in clutch situations.” He was one of the driving forces that turned around a losing program into a well-respected, competitive one. He and his teammates avenged losses to rivals Valhalla and Tuckahoe all while making their presence known in league play. Charlie’s numbers place him in the top five of many notable categories over 40 years later. In fact, he still holds the records for career receptions, career receiving yards and career receiving touchdowns. All of it compiled in three years of varsity play. The two year All-League selection garnered All-Section honors in his senior year.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Charlie is currently employed in the machinery manufacturing business.
