2015 Coach | Athletic Director 1966-1994

Mr. Al Hubschman’s, more popularly and affectionately known as “Hubby,” career at Rye Neck spanned an impressive 28 years from 1967-1996. More impressive than the length of tenure are the accomplishments achieved. Mr. Hubschman served the school district in many ways including as a physical education teacher, coach, and athletic director during his time at Rye Neck.

The Rye Neck teams and student-athletes achieved tremendous success under Hubby’s watch and guidance evidenced by most of the team banners on the gymnasium walls and lobby plaques including:

  • 6 League and 1 Sectional Girls Basketball Championships

  • 5 League, 2 Sectional and 1 Regional Softball Championships

  • 11 League, 5 Sectional, and 2 State Girls Soccer Championships

  • 8 League, 6 Sectional and 2 State Field Hockey Championships

  • 7 League, 2 Sectional and 1 State Boys Basketball Titles where he served

as the coach of the undefeated 1976-77 State Championship team. He was selected as Boys Basketball Coach of the Year at the conclusion of that amazing season.

In all, during his tenure, 54 league titles, 21 sectional titles, 3 regional titles and 3 state championships were won by Rye Neck teams. 47 student-athletes were selected for the prestigious Con Edison Scholar Athlete award with most, if not all of the applications being hand delivered to Con Edison’s office by Hubby himself.

Mr. Hubschman took on many other initiatives that were critical to the success of the athletic program and its athletes. He instituted the end of the year sports award ceremony, and organized the Booster Club (formerly known as the Dad’s Club) to benefit teams and any individuals in need as well as organized and led the 1972-73 campaign to raise funds for the Rye Neck athletic programs during the austerity budget. He was a staunch advocate for women’s rights prior to Title IX legislation by ensuring money went towards female Rye Neck athletic programs along with fighting for female athletes to be recognized along with males by the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Old Timers’ Association. Such efforts contributed to Hubby being named the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Charles Gronberg Award from the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Old Timers’ Association.

Hubby was a permanent fixture in the gym and in the halls of Rye Neck and was always there for his students and athletes. When Rye Neck alumni and former colleagues speak of Hubby there are common themes – “Hubby is a man of passion, enthusiasm, generosity and humility.” Former Rye Neck greats Damon Yizar, Robin Smith, Ralph Vasami and Dana Radogna are quick to credit their success to Hubby and express their deepest thanks and appreciation for all he did for them and Rye Neck athletics overall.
