Karen Theis, a 1982 graduate, lettered 3 times in volleyball, basketball, track, and softball. Only a small number of Hoover athletes have been able to letter in sports for three consecutive years. Karen competed for the softball team and the track team at the same time. There is no doubt she would have lettered for 4 years in all 4 sports but at that time freshmen girls had to be on freshman teams and were not permitted to participate at the varsity level. 

She was the first Hoover girl to score 1000 career points. Scoring 1000 points is an outstanding accomplishment, especially when it was done in only 3 years. During Karen's high school career, there was no three-point shot and the girls played with the same size basketball as the boys. She led the basketball team all three years in scoring, averaging 21 points per game and still has the record for career rebounds averaging 11.7 per game. Karen earned All-Federal League honors all 3 years and was selected the Player of the Year her senior year. She was a District First Team selection by the Akron Beacon Journal and earned 3rd team All-Ohio honors her senior year.

Karen's #24 jersey was retired by Coach Solley at the conclusion of her senior year and was awarded a full Division I basketball scholarship to play at Miami of Ohio. She was a 4-year letter winner and is still ranked as having the 2nd highest single season field goal percentage at 59%. Karen has been an educator and coach in Lee County Florida for 20 years, currently teaching at Spring Creek Elementary School.
